Finding your decorating style

There are soooo many styles of decorating out there....beachy, boho, contemporary, country, English, farmhouse, French, hamptons, industrial, midcentury, minimalist, modern, Scandinavian, shabby-chic, traditional, transitional, vintage......did I miss any?!

Can you guess which style is my favorite? Want a hint? I live near the beach Queensland, spent a lot of time in country Victoria and Now have a vintage shop.

I love vintage - old cane and timber, rusty metal, old suitcases and frames, silverware, tin and enamelware. I also love interesting patterns and prints, texture, chunky knits, fur, colored glass, living plants, animals and the ocean.....yes a bit of a mix!

I love color, and the bohemian look that is so in right now, but I regularly change my mind on which colors I love. For this reason I find it best to stick to neutrals in walls and floors and large pieces of furniture, and bring color in with easy to change items like cushions, Art and crockery.

I also like geometric lines and clean, white walls and I'm actually a bit of a minimalist, so that cluttered boho look is a bit much for me (and I have kids and a husband that hate cushions and make enough of their own clutter!) I have culled my collections (most of them are at the shop!) I've just gone through a pink and green traditional phase, in my rented 1930s Queenslander, but I'm over that now. We are moving back into our 1960s highset 'butterbox' home, after tenants, and it needs a bit of a freshen up...on a really minuscule budget....Last time I did the mid-century modern thing with teak and orange, grey and steel modern sofas and white leather chairs. This time my budget is tight, vintage and second hand is key, and I want simple and eco-friendly and calming. Right now I'm painting most of our walls white and sanding back the timber floors. There will be a black wall or two as well...but I’ll explain that in future blog posts!

Sanded floors and first coat of white over grey walls

So simple,eco-friendly and calming....basically my favorite decorating style is a mix between the Bohemian, farmhouse and vintage styles with a bit of the beach thrown in. Or as I call it 'vintage boho farmhouse on holiday!'

I have to say that I love this time we are living in, especially in regards to decorating our homes. As an interior decorator I have seen the 80s peach, cream and gold obsession, 90s farmhouse with bottle green, plaids and chickens and 2000s Hamptons white everything, (and lived through the 70s mission brown and bright wallpaper faze) but people today can really throw together a mishmash of their favorites without committing to one theme as much as we all did the past.

So what's your decorating style? What are your favourite things? Does your home reflect your style and loves, or is it a work in progress like mine?!
